THIS FILM WAS SO GOOD. It was my first Linklater--I'd never seen a movie of his before. I was watching movies that year just because they were in theaters, without knowing much about them. I couldn't believe what I was seeing. I was like...holy shit. I mean it was just so strange and fascinating to see men being together in such a recognizable way, that I felt like I'd never seen before.
I LOVE this movie. I saw a sneak preview of it and then I saw it a 2nd time before it vanished from theatres a week or two later. I remember that it got positive reviews (John Waters put it on his annual Top Ten Best of the Year list) but it flopped pretty hard. I own it on Blu-ray, which contains 30 minutes of deleted scenes. It's one of those movies that you don't want to end, which is why it's so much fun to re-visit. I showed it to my younger brother and his friend and they loved it, and I was happy to hear that a childhood friend of mine (who played baseball in his youth) is a big fan of it as well. It definitely deserves a wider following.
I remember watching this movie with my wife. It was a very bittersweet experience. When it was over, I mentioned that, yeah, the movie was great, but no one had a college experience that was actually that fun. Her response was something along the lines of, "Uh...I did."
I had a hard time in college (to put it mildly) and missed out on all the fun stuff this movie shows. I absolutely loved watching it and I don't think I'll ever be able to watch it again.
Gah, sorry to hear that. If it makes you feel any better, the college athlete life is not all keg parties and mud wrestling. I was on the football team in college, and that takes its own kind of psychological toll. Some of the most depressed moments of my life were the hour before I had to leave my apartment for practice.

Great movie, I recommend it all the time. I played small college baseball in the early 80’s and this perfectly captures the vibe.

Linklater’s overlooked work is better than most directors’ high points. Great movie!
I love Linklater's films, especially the "Before" trilogy!
agree with all of this. it’s the best example of healthy (but not perfectly whitewashed) masculinity
Guys being dudes!

I'd also add, not that it's necessary, that I had a million times more fun watching this than 'Boyhood'.
Boyhood is more like a casual hypnotic journey through time. This one is a raucous roller coaster of joy.
My soul can't bear any more nostalgia for early 80s Texas. Gonna go implode now.
It had me thinking about my college years for sure. I saw guys get got by the Impossible Sit-up when I was that age.
